skeleton | the hard structure that supports and protects the human body |
involuntary | automatic movement; you do not control |
voluntary | brain sends message to muscle; you control the movements |
muscular system | the system of the body that is made up of all the muscles attached to bones; moves the body |
nervous system | the system that controls all other body systems |
brain | the control center of the nervous system |
nerves | carry messages from inside to outside the body |
spinal cord | a thick bundle of nerves along which messages travel between the brain and the rest of the body |
circulatory system | the body system that carries oxygen, food, and wastes throughout the body |
artery | the largest of the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to all parts of the body |
heart | the organ inside the chest that pumps blood throughout the body |
veins | blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart |
respiratory system | the body system that takes oxygen from the air |
lungs | the pair of organs used for breathing found in the chest |
digestive system | the body system that breaks down food so that it can be used by the body |
large intestine | the lower part of the intestine including appendix, colon, and rectum; removes water from waste |
digestion | the process by which food is changed into substances that can be absorbed by the body |
stomach | the large organ like a bag or pouch into which food passes from the mouth and throat to begin the process of digestion |
small intestine | the part of the digestion system that extends from the stomach to the large intestine and completes the digestion of food |
esophagus | the passage for food from the mouth traveling to the stomach |
