Weather Vocab Words and Definitions

TermDefinition
weather The conditions in the atmosphere at a given time includes temp, air pressure, cloud cover, precipitation, etc
climate the long-term average for weather in a given area, usually at least 30 years of data including temps, rainfall, humidity, etc
water cycle the continuous and repeating pattern-->evaporation, condensation, precipitation, that keeps water moving through the atmosphere
evaporation the process of a liquid changing to a gas when energy (usually heat) is added to it
condensation the process of gas changing into a liquid when energy (usually heat) is removed; in the watercycle, can result in the formation of clouds, fog, or dew
precipitation the process of liquid or solid water falling through the atmosphere
freezing the process of a liquid changing from a solid from the removal of energy (usually heat)
melting the process of a solid changing into a liquid when energy is added (usually heat)
ground water Areas on Earth's surface where water is stored including oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, even puddles.
transpiration when trees or other plants release water (similar to perspiration in humans)
wind air moving from high pressure areas towards low pressure areas, can be local or occur over large areas
Coriolis Effect a mass, such as the Earth, experiences a force acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis rotation
control all of the variables that need to be kept the same (controlled) in all groups / trials / tests
independent variable the variable that I change
dependent variable the variable expected to change as a result of a change in the independent variable
scientific method the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation
