Paresis Slight paralysis
Gyri Convulsions/ mounds of the cerebral hemispheres
Fissures Deep grooves that separate gyri
Hypochondriasis The preoccupation with thoughts of disease and concern that one is suffering from a serious condition that persists despite medical reassurance to the contrary
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) electrical shock applied to the brain to induce convulsions
CSF cerebrospinal fluid
ALS amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Sedative a drug that has a calming effect and quiets nervousness
PNS peripheral nervous system
Dysphasia impairment of speech production and inability to arrange words in an understandable way
Glasgow Coma Scale a neurologic scale used to assess level of consciousness
Motor Deficit loss or impairment of muscle function
Neuralgia pain along the course of a nerve
Seizure sudden, transient disturbances in brain function resulting in abnormal firing of nerve impulses
Syncope Fainting
Tactile Stimulation evoking a response by touching
Agnosia any of many types of loss of neurologic function involving interpretation of sensory information
