TermDefinition
Energy The ability to do work or make something happen.
Chemical Potential Energy Energy stored in the bonds between atoms.
Gravitational Potential Energy Energy stored in objects due to their height above the ground.
Elastic Potential Energy Energy stored in stretched or squashed objects.
Kinetic Energy Energy due to an object's motion.
Electrical Energy The movement of electrically charged particles.
Heat Energy Caused by the movement of atoms and found inside all hot objects.
Sound Energy Energy produced by vibrating objects.
Amplitude The height of a wave, measured from the rest position.
Frequency The number of waves that pass a point in one second.
Wavelength The distance between two crests or troughs of a wave.
Sound Vibrations that can be detected by the ears.
Light Energy A type of energy which has wavelengths- that can be detected by the eyes.
Reflection Occurs when light changes direction and 'bounces off' a surface.
Refraction Occurs when light changes direction ('bends' or refracts) when it passes from one substance to another (e.g. air to water).
Concave A surface which curves inwards.
Convex A surface which curves outwards.
Mirror A surface which reflects a clear image.
ROYGBIV The order of the colours which make up white light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).
Opaque An object which blocks light.
Transparent An object which allows all light to pass through.
Translucent An object which allows some light to pass through.
Shadow An area that light cannot travel to because it is being blocked by an opaque object.
