Term | Definition |
---|---|
Energy | The ability to do work or make something happen. |
Chemical Potential Energy | Energy stored in the bonds between atoms. |
Gravitational Potential Energy | Energy stored in objects due to their height above the ground. |
Elastic Potential Energy | Energy stored in stretched or squashed objects. |
Kinetic Energy | Energy due to an object's motion. |
Electrical Energy | The movement of electrically charged particles. |
Heat Energy | Caused by the movement of atoms and found inside all hot objects. |
Sound Energy | Energy produced by vibrating objects. |
Amplitude | The height of a wave, measured from the rest position. |
Frequency | The number of waves that pass a point in one second. |
Wavelength | The distance between two crests or troughs of a wave. |
Sound | Vibrations that can be detected by the ears. |
Light Energy | A type of energy which has wavelengths- that can be detected by the eyes. |
Reflection | Occurs when light changes direction and 'bounces off' a surface. |
Refraction | Occurs when light changes direction ('bends' or refracts) when it passes from one substance to another (e.g. air to water). |
Concave | A surface which curves inwards. |
Convex | A surface which curves outwards. |
Mirror | A surface which reflects a clear image. |
ROYGBIV | The order of the colours which make up white light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). |
Opaque | An object which blocks light. |
Transparent | An object which allows all light to pass through. |
Translucent | An object which allows some light to pass through. |
Shadow | An area that light cannot travel to because it is being blocked by an opaque object. |
