Moon_Tides_Eclipses

QuestionAnswer
Waxing Lit side is on the right. The Moon is moving towards a full moon.
Waning Lit side is on the left. The Moon is moving towards a new moon.
Seasons are caused by three factors Revolution of Earth around the Sun Tilt of the Earth’s axis Parallelism of the axis (always points to the North star - Polaris)
Tide The periodic rise and fall of water level caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon.
Neap Tide When the sun, moon and earth are at right angles to each other (1st and 3rd quarter). They are weaker – smaller bulge and thus a smaller tide. (smaller difference between high and low tides)
Spring Tide When the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line (full moon and new moon). They are stronger – larger bulge and thus a larger tide. High tides are very high, and low tides are very low (biggest difference between high and low tides)
Umbra The dark area of the shadow. Inner portion which does not receive direct sunlight. Total eclipse
Penumbra The gray area of the shadow. Outer portion of the shadow where some of the Sun’s light reaches. Partial eclipse
Lunar eclipse The earth interrupts light shining on the moon (Moon passes through Earth’s shadow). This can happen only at the time of a full moon.
Solar eclipse When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured.
