| Term | Definition |

| Niche | the role of an organism in its habitat ; including how an organism eats, and what other organisms eat it |
| Competition | more than one species of organism can live in the same habitat while obtaining the same food |
| Predation | an interaction in which one organism kills another for food and/or nutrients |
| Symbiosis | any relationship in which two species live closely together |
| Commensalism | a relationship in which one species benefits while the other species is neither helped or harmed |
| Mutualism | a relationship in which both species benefit |
| Parasitism | a relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed |
| Succession | when ecosystems and their communities are changing all the time |
| Pioneer Species | the first species to populate and live in an area |
| Colonize | the occupation of a habitat or territory by a single population of species |
| Dominate | to take over or control |
| Ecosystem Services | the benefits humans receive from an ecosystem(s) |
| Ecology | the study of how organisms interact with their environment |
| Natural Resource | resources from nature ; not man-made |
| Conservation | the practice of using less of a resource(s) |
| Sustainability | the way humans interact with their environment(s) the insures there will be enough resources for the future |
| Ecological Restoration | the process of the recovery of an ecosystem |
