objective 8 The word objective refers to something that is aimed at or desired. To achieve a lasting peace, we must work toward this objective.
prior knowledge 6 When a learner has prior knowledge, it refers to the information and educational context they already have before learning new material. Cabinet ministers have all denied prior knowledge about the coup before it happened.
criteria 8 A guiding principle or standard against which something can be judged or decided. The bank is carefully considering its lending criteria.
annotation 8 A note or comment added to a text or diagram to explain or comment on it. A annotation or comment will be added to every correction the editor makes in the manuscript.
misconception 8 A view or opinion that is wrong because it is founded on weak reasoning or comprehension. There is a common misconception that all mediation is done while sitting cross-legged.
predictive reading 5 Using information from the text, such as titles and headings, graphics and diagrams, to predict what will happen in the story, is known as prediction reading. Students utilize predictive reading when they guess what will happen next in the text based on their prior understanding of the material they are reading.
close reading 7 One way to define close reading is as follows: the attentive, sustained interpretation of a short textual excerpt. One of the most important aspects of a close reading is that it places an emphasis on the singular and the particular over the general.
familiarize 8 The act of acquiring knowledge or understanding. I took a walk around the neighborhood when I had just moved in to familiarize with the area.
context 8 Context clues are suggestions contained inside a sentence, paragraph, or passage that might help a reader understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar terms. An author uses context clues to help a reader comprehend the meaning of new or unfamiliar terms.
syllabus 2 An outline of the topics covered in a course of study or instruction. Using the syllabus, students will know what you anticipate from them in terms of quality of work, and will be aware of what they need to do to prepare for class.
degree evaluation 7 To determine that you have met all requirements, a degree evaluation is similar to a course audit. As a result of the Degree Evaluation, students can keep track of how close they are to completing their degree program.
default 5 The failure to repay a loan is referred to as default. Defaulting will significantly lower your credit score, have an impact on your ability to obtain future credit, and may result in the confiscation of personal property.
developmental 3 Development of someone's academic knowledge. Students who enroll in developmental courses will be better prepared for college-level work.
pre-requisite 1 You must pass a prerequisite course before you may enroll in the class you want. Before you may enroll in the class you prefer, you must first complete this course.
accommodation 6 Accommodation is a compromise or settlement. Those with disabilities are accommodated at Stark State College.
disqualified 5 Declared intelligible for future participation. After being convicted of drug possession or sale while receiving federal financial aid, you will be disqualified to receive financial aid again.
commencement 7 In a commencement ceremony, degrees or diplomas are awarded to students who have successfully completed their academic studies. Although a commencement ceremony marks the completion of your studies, it also marks the beginning of the next phase of your career.
certificate 4 Acts as proof that a student received education and/or training in a particular trade while enrolled in college courses A college certificate confirms your knowledge of specific abilities, which are frequently required in a tough profession in the workplace.
transcript 7 Shows all of the courses you've taken, along with their grades and your overall GPA. An official transcript is a detailed record of a student's academic achievements.
