| Response | An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus |
| Homeostasis | The maintenance of stable internal conditions regardless of external conditions |
| Consumer/Heterotroph | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Diffusion | The process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane |
| Active Transport | The movement of materials through a cell membrane using a cellular energy "pump" |
| Mitosis | The stage of the cell cycle during which the cell's nucleus divides into 2 nuclei and 1 copy of the DNA is distributed into each "daughter cell" |
| Meiosis | The process that occurs in the formation of sex cells (sperm and egg) by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half |
| Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) | The genetic material that carries information about and organism and is passed from parents to offspring |
| Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) | A nucleic acid that plays an important role in the production of proteins |
| Transcription | The process by which the genetic code in DNA is transcribed onto a strand of mRNA |
| Translation | The process by which protein chain is created from information within the RNA |
| Heredity | The passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| Phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits |
| Genotype | An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations |
| Taxonomy | The scientific study of how living things are classified |

| Eukaryotic | Having cells that contain a nucleus/nuclei |
| Symbiosis | A close relationship between 2 organisms in which at least one of the organisms benefits |
| Chordate | The phylum whose members have a notochord, a nerve chord, and slits in their throat area at some point in their lives |
| Endotherm | An animal whose body regulates its own temperature by controlling the internal heat it produces |
| Exotherm | An animal whose body does not produce internal heat |
| Complete Metamorphosis | A change in body form characterized by 4 dramatically different stages |
| Incomplete metamorphosis | A change in body form consisting of the egg, nymph, and adult stages |
| Chloroplasts | Plant cell structures in which photosynthesis occurs |
| Chlororphyll | A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria |
