QuestionAnswer
Know the difference between a testable and untestable question A testable question could have an experiment performed, an untestable question is just a regular question EX: Why is the sky blue? Is an untestable question. EX: Does the wavelengths of light emitted affect the color of the sky at different times of day?
What is the independent or manipulated variable? The variable that is changed in the experiment
What is the dependent or responding variable? The variable that is measured or observed
What are constants or standardizing variables? Things that need to stay the same in a controlled experiment
What is the control and what is its purpose? The reference point to compare all tests to and evaluate if an experiment is working
Be able to figure out percent error if given a problem Percent Error = (Accepted Value - Actual Value) /Accepted Value x 100
What makes an experiment fair and valid? Accurate measurements, repeated trials, detailed notes
What is the engineering design process? Creating something to solve a problem
What is the scientific method? Can be used to discover connections and draw conclusions about the way things work
What is the difference between the scientific method and the engineering design process? Scientific Method answers questions about how things work, Engineering Process creates new things to solve problems
How do I ensure that my experiment is accurate? Measure and follow procedures carefully and do many trials
What is data? Facts, figures, measurements, observations
Know and understand the lab rules Follow instructions, wear closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, no horseplay etc.
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative data? quantitative= numbers qualitative= descriptions
What is an error? A mistake in procedure, a mistake in measurement, a poor experimental design. A large mistake is called a blunder
Know the different types of graphs (Bar, Pie, Line) Bar- used when comparing things to each other, Pie- comparing parts to a whole, Line- change over time
What is the purpose of a graph? To reveal trends in data
What system of measurements do scientists use? SI (modernized version of the metric system) (International System of Units)
How do scientists communicate their results In person, online, in print
Know the science process skills Classify, Make Models, Measure, Predict, Define Operationally, Observe, Infer, Experiment, Form a Hypothesis, Use Variables, Use Numbers, Interpret Data, Communicate
What is a controlled experiment? Where you only test 1 factor at a time and all other parts of the experiment stay the same
What does it mean to draw conclusions? It is the step of the scientific method where you decide whether or not your results support your original hypothesis
What is CER? Be able to tell a good CER from a bad CER Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. How to answer a scientific question or argument

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
