President | The chief executive of a country. In the U.S., Obama is our President. |
Vice-President. | An officer next in rank to the President. In the U.S., Biden is our Vice President. |
Separation of Powers | The division of governmental power into 3 branches--legislative, executive,and judicial. |
Checks and balances | Constitutional mechanisms that authorize each branch of government to share powers with the other branches and thereby check each other's activities. |
Candidate | An individual who applies for or seeks a job or position in local, state, or national government. |
Primary election | An election to choose a political party's candidate for an elective office. |
General election | Held in November of an election year; voters choose between the Republican, Democrat, and any 3rd party candidates. |
Census | Official population count every 10 years; affects the number of seats a state has in the House of Representatives which affects the number of Electoral votes. |
Treaty | A formal agreement between two or more sovereign states. |
Ambassador | Person who represents the United States government in foreign countries. The President appoints U.S. Ambassadors. |
Bill | A proposal presented to a legislative body at the state or national level for possible enactment as a law. |
Veto | Chief executive's power to reject a bill passed by a legislature; literally (Latin), "I forbid". |
Pocket veto | When a president kills a bill passed during the last 10 days Congress is in session by simply refusing to act upon it. |
Line-item veto | When a president kills a bill passed during the last 10 days Congress is in session by simply refusing to act upon it in session. |
War Powers Act (1973) | This law requires that soldiers sent abroad by the president be brought back within 60 days unless Congress approves the action. |
Alliance | A partnership, coalition, or agreement between two or more nations. |
Foreign Policy | Politics of the federal government directed to matters beyond the U.S. borders, especially relations with other countries. |
Patronage | The practice of granting favors to reward party loyalty. |
Cabinet | Persons appointed by a President or Governor to head the executive departments of government and act as official advisers to the executive. |
Bureaucracy | The departments and their officials as a group. |
Elector | Member of a party chosen in each state to formally elect the President and the Vice-President. |
Electoral College | A body of electors chosen to elect the President and Vice President of the United States. |
Electoral Vote | Each state receives a certain number of electoral votes.That number is the number of Senators plus Representatives. Maryland has 10 electoral votes (2 Senators + 8 Representatives). |
Executive agreement | An agreement made by the President directly with the head of a foreign state. It has the force of law but (unlike a treaty) does not require Senate consent. |
Executive order | A rule issued by an executive that has the force of Law. |
Mandate | An authoritative order that must be obeyed. |
Pardon | The official release of a person charged with a crime, at the request of a chief executive. |
Amnesty | A general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction. |
Treason | Betrayal of one's country by levying war against the United States or offering comfort or aid to its enemies. |
Emergency Powers | Wide-ranging powers a President may exercise during times of crisis; or those powers permitted to the President by Congress for a limited time. |
Enemy combatant | Enemy fighter captured on the field of battle whether or not a member of an army. |
Regulatory commissions/agencies (what do they do?) | Independent of all three branches; make rules for large industries and businesses that affect the interests of the public. (FTC, FDA, FAA, EPA, FCC). |
