Plate Tectonics

QuestionAnswer
What causes convection currents in Earth's mantle? Molten rock heated by the core rises and then sinks as it cools off.
How does temperature affect density? Heat causes the molecules to spread out and become less dense. Cooling off causes the molecules to get closer and more dense.
What is seafloor spreading? Magma flows up through cracks in the ocean floor and spreads the tectonic plates apart.
What causes seafloor spreading? The convection currents in the mantle cause the tectonic plates to move.
