| Fuging Tunes | Hymns or psalm tunes with brief polyphonic sections that have imitative entrances |
| Call and Response | A phrase sung by a leader is responded to by a group |
| Polyrhythms | Distinctly different rhythm patterns being played at the same time |
| Field Hollers | Rhythmic free singing among field workers |
| Work Songs | Singing in rhythm with the work being done |
| Front Line | Responsible for playing the melody; usually made up of one/two cornets (or trumpets), one clarinet, and one trombone |
| Rhythm Section | Responsible for the basic beat and accompaniment; made up of a string bass, guitar or banjo, sometimes piano, and sometimes drums |
| Scat Singing | When the singer sings nonsense syllables instead of words; became a basic element of jazz vocal styles |
| Polytonality | The simultaneous use of two or more keys |
| Cue Sheets | Told the musicians exactly when to start and stop playing the suggested music in order to make sure that it matched the action of the film |
| Vitaphone System | An invention that allowed music recorded on phonograph records to be played simultaneously with the film; produced by the Warner Brothers Studio in 1926 |
