Scientific Method

Study Stack #1

QuestionAnswer
Define Scientific Method. The scientific method is a series of steps that a scientist takes in order to solve a problem/ answer a question.
How do scientists gather information in step 1- state a problem? They observe to gather information and use their five senses.
How do scientists make observations? They make observations by asking questions to themselves and using their five senses to identify objects or events.
Define hypothesis A hypothesis is an answer to a question or a possible explanation to a question. (The word affect)
Define prediction A prediction is an IF to THEN statement. It happens before the answer to the question is actually determined.
Define variable A variable is what is being studied. {independent variable and dependent variable}
What is the difference between a control group and an experimental group? The difference is that a control group has no variables changed (used for comparison) and the experimental group has one variable changed.
Explain the difference between an independent and dependent variable An independent variable is what is CHANGED in the experiment and the dependent variable is what changes due to the independent variable. IF=independent variable THEN= dependent variable
What are scientists doing when they perform experiments? The scientists are collecting data, looking for patterns in the data, and they do the experiment many times with many things changed each time for a more accurate result.
Why is it important to do an experiment more than once? Should a scientist have a large or small number of subjects in an experiment? Why? A larger number of subjects is better when you do an experiment because when you do an experiment over and over. That way the data is more accurate and decreases the chance that you made a mistake.
What do scientists do when they draw a conclusion? When scientists draw a conclusion, they state the results and figure out if their results support their hypothesis. Then, they have to explain why or why not.
What happens during the communication step of the Scientific Method? They use lab reports, articles, presentations, etc. to EXPLAIN their research and results. Then, they can repeat the experiment to make sure that everything is the way they wanted/ expected.
Explain a controlled experiment. A controlled experiment tests only one varible at a time and it contains control group, experimental group, and a variable.
Explain the difference between a theory and a law. a theory is an explanation of something that is most likely entirely true while a law is very scientifically proven- EX: gravity
Identify parts of the scientific method when presented with a description of an experiment. This means write out each step and tell me what happens in that step. ***List each step and explain it in further detail***

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
