| Symbolism | Using rhythm, sound, and the clustering of images to suggest moods or emotions |
| Primitivism | The use of frenzied, irregular rhythms and percussive effects to evoke a feeling of primitive power |
| Expressionism | Generally represents, in art, the tormented feelings of people stuck in a world of pain and conflict |
| Atonal | Lacking a recognizable tonal center or tonic |
| Twelve Tone/Dodecaphony | A new system of musical organization that involves arranging the twelve chromatic tones in a chosen (non-scalelike) order, called a tone row, and then writing the music using different versions of that row one after another; created by Arnold Schoenberg |
