ecology Scientific discipline in which the relationships among living organisms and the interaction the organisms have with their environments are studied
biosphere A thin layer around Earth that supports life which extends several kilometers above the Earth’s surface and extends several kilometers below the ocean’s surface
biotic factor Living factors in an organism’s environment
abiotic factor Nonliving factors in an organism’s environment
population Organisms of a single species that share the same geographic location at the same time
biological community a group of interacting populations that occupy the same geographic area at the same time.
ecosystem a biological community and all of the abiotic factors that affect it.
biome a large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similar types of communities.
habitat an area where an organism lives.
niche is the role or position that an organism has in its environment.
predation When species get their food by eating other organisms. It is the predator.
symbiosis The close relationship that exists when two or more species live together
mutualism symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved.
commensalism an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
parasitism the practice of living as a parasite in or on another organism which many times causes harm to the host of the parasite.
autotroph Organisms that collect energy from sunlight or inorganic substances to produce food.
heterotroph Organisms that get their energy requirements by consuming other organisms.
herbivore an organism that eats only plants to gain energy.
carnivore an organism that eats only animals to gain energy
omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals to gain energy.
detritivore an animal which feeds on dead organic material (worms, beetles, millipedes)
trophic level steps in a food chain or food web.
food chain a simple model that shows how energy flows through an ecosystem.
food web a model representing the many interconnected food chains and pathways in which energy flows through a group of organisms.
biomass the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume.
