Categories and families of instruments

| cordophone | an instrument that uses the vibration of a string to generate sound |
| strings | sit at the front of the orchestra and consist mainly of violin, viola, cello and double bass |
| woodwinds | sit behind the string family in the orchestra and consist mainly of flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon |
| brass | sit behind the woodwinds and in front of the percussion and consist of trumpet, trombone, French horn and tuba |
| percussion | sit at the back of the orchestra and contain lots of pitched and unpitched instruments |
| timpani | also known as kettle drums, members of the percussion family |
| clarinet | belongs to the woodwind family, has a single reed |
| oboe | belongs to the woodwind family, has a double reed |
| piccolo | smaller and higher pitched than the flute, belongs to the woodwind family |
| flute | belongs to the woodwind family, does not have a reed |
| trombone | the only brass instrument with a slide to change pitch |
| trumpet | smallest and highest pitched brass instrument |
| triangle | unpitched percussion instrument, geometric shape |
| violin | smallest and highest pitched string instrument |
| double bass | largest and deepest pitched string instrument |
| cello | string instruments held between the knees to play |
| bow | used to play string instruments |
| valves | used to change the pitch on brass instruments |
| bassoon | largest woodwind instrument, has a double cane reed |
| viola | string instrument held under the chin, larger and deeper in pitch than the violin |
| French horn | brass instrument that doesn't actually come from France |
| glockenspiel | high-pitched percussion instrument, bars are hit with mallets |
| conductor | someone who directs the players of the orchestra |
| five | the number of categories used to classify instruments |
| four | the number of families in the Western Symphony Orchestra |
| mouthpiece | used to blow into a brass instrument |
| bell | the end of a brass instrument where the sound comes out |
