TermDefinition
The natural sciences are commonly divided into three areas: biology or life science, geology or Earth science, and physics or physical science.
scientific law a description of a specific relationship under given conditions in the natural world. Laws show how the world works.
scientific theory a well-supported explanation of nature. Theories explain how the world works.
Empirical evidence all the measurements and data scientists gather in support of a scientific explanation.
Empirical evidence is gathered through observation and experimentation.
fieldwork gathering empirical evidence outdoors or where conditions cannot be controlled
laboratory scientists have the opportunity to collect data in a controlled environment.
