Science Chapter 11 Test Notecards

Fresh Water Water that is not salty and has little or no taste, color, or smell.
Salt Water Water that contains dissolved salts and other materials.
Water Cycle The continuous movement of water through the environment of the Earth.
Evaporation The process in which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor.
Condensation The process in which water vapor in the atmosphere becomes liquid.
Precipitation Water that falls from clouds.
Divide A ridge, or continuous line of high land, from which water flows in different directions.
Drainage Basin An area into which all of the water on one side of a divide flows.
Turnover The rising and sinking of cold and warm water layers.
Iceberg A mass of ice floating in the ocean.
Eutrophication An increase of nutrients in a lake.
Groundwater Water held underground.
Permeable Describes a substance that liquids can flow through.
Impermeable Describes a substance that liquids cannot flow through.
Water Table The top of the region which is saturated, completely filled with water.
Aquifer An underground layer of impermeable rock that contains water.
Spring A flow of water from the ground at a place where the surface of the land dips below the water table.
Artesian Well A well in which water flows to the surface naturally because it is under pressure.
