The Classical Era

| Sonata Form | Based on the overall plan of the statement of two contrasting melodies, or themes, the manipulation of those themes, and the restatement of those themes |
| Theme | A musical idea that serves as a starting point for development of a composition or section of a composition |
| Motives | Short themes or parts of themes |
| Modulation | The frequent changing of tonal centers |
| Cadenza | A special time for a soloist to showcase their skills during a performance; often placed toward the end of fast movements |
| Trill | Two notes played back and forth very fast |
| Chamber Music | Music for small ensembles |
| String Quartet | Became the most important chamber music medium; consisted of a first and second violin, a viola, and a cello |
| Rondo Form | An extended alternating form in which the first theme, A, returns several times with contrasting music (represented by B and C) between the A's |
| Orchestration | Writing and arranging music for orchestra to achieve the most effective overall combination |
| Cyclic Form | The unification of a symphony with a musical idea that appears in each movement |
