pericardium double walled sac enclosing the heart
fiberous pericardium loose fitting superficial part of pericardium; tough dense protective layer; anchors to surrounding stuctures; prevents overfilling of the heart
serous pericardium(2layers) thin slippery layer of pericardium composed of 2layers parietal and visceral(epicardium)
1st layer Parietal layer lines internal surface of fiberous pericardium attaches to large arterties; turns inferiorly onto the external heart surface creating 2nd layer
2nd layer Visceral (epicardium) 2nd layer of serous pericardium forms the inferior membrane of the pericardial cavity
these 2layers create the pericardial cavity between the parietal layer and the visceral (epicardium) layer of the serous pericardium the pericardial cavity is created; it contains a film of serous fluid that allow the smooth friction free gliding of membranes agaist each other during heart activity
