The Baroque Era

| Recitative Vocal Style | A kind of combination of singing and speech that served as dialogue in baroque operas and other related works |
| Arioso Vocal Style | A more lyrical style that was more melodic and expressive; the aria was an expansion of arioso-styled singing |
| Chorus/Choir | A group of singers |
| Claudio Monteverdi | The first master of operatic composition |
| Cantata | A dramatic work for solo voices, sometimes a small chorus, and either basso continuo or a small orchestra |
| A Passion | A work that is very similar to an oratorio, but is specifically a musical setting of the story of Jesus Christ's suffering and crucifixion as told in the Bible |
| Fugue | Based on the polyphonic development of a melody called the subject; composed for a certain number of voice parts |
| Countersubject | A contrasting melody that is played along with the imitation of the subject; played by the first voice in an exposition |
| Concertos | Works for one or more solo instruments and orchestra |
| Concerto Grosso | When a small solo group opposes the orchestra |
| Solo Concerto | When the relatively soft sound of an individual solo instrument opposes that of an orchestra |
