General science terms

TermDefinition
Scientist A person who has knowledge of science that is based on observed facts and tested truths.
Scientific Inquiry The way scientists find facts and solve problems.
Classify To sort or arrange objects into groups based on how they are alike or how they are different.
Data Information gathered in an experiment.
Recording Observations Writing down the information gathered during an experiment.
Reproduction The process by which living things produce offspring.
Inherited Traits Traits that are passed down from parents to offspring.
Offspring New living things that parents produce or the young of plants and animals.
Species One of the groups into which scientists divide living things according to their shared characteristics.
Temperature A measure in degrees of how warm or cold a substance is.
Traits Qualities or characteristics of living things or a species.
Adapt The process by which species change over time in order to survive in the environment around them.
Organism A living thing, such as a plant or an animal.
Predator Animals that kill and eat other animals.
