Question | Answer |
---|---|
Fresh Water | A naturally occurring water on the Earth's surface in bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, and underground as groundwater in aquifers and underground streams. |
Salt Water | water from a sea or ocean. On average, seawater in the world's oceans has a salinity of about 3.5%. This means that every kilogram (2.2lb), or every litre, of seawater has approximately 35 grams (1.2 oz) of dissolved salts |
Water Cycle | This describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. |
Evaporation | A type of vaporization of a liquid, that occur only on the surface of a liquid. |
Condensation | The change of the physical state of aggregation (or simply state) of matter from gaseous phase into liquid phase and the reverse of evaporation. |
Precipitation | Any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that is pulled down by gravity and deposited on the Earth's surface. |
Divide | The line separating neighboring drainage basins (catchments). |
Drainage Basins | An extent of land where water from rain and melting snow or ice drains downhill into a body of water, such as a river, lake, reservoir, estuary, wetland, sea or ocean. |
turnover | The movement of something into, through and out of a place, the rate at which a thing is depleted and replaced. |
iceberg | A large piece of ice from freshwater that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier or ice shelf and is floating in open water. |
euthrophication | an increase in the concentration of chemical nutrients in an Ecosystem to an extent that increases the primary productivity of the ecosystem. |
groundwater | Water located beneath the ground surface |
permeable | rock and sediment water can flow through |
impermeable | no water can flow through |
water table | the level at which the groundwater pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure. |
aquifer | an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock |
spring | any natural occurrence where water flows on to the surface of the earth from below the surface. |
artesian wall | a confined aquifer containing groundwater that will flow upward through a well |
