Energy
8.P.2.1 & 8.P.2.2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wind farm | When large numbers of windmills are placed in one area for the purpose of generating electricity |
| Solar energy | energy from the sun |
| Examples of renewable energy resources | Hydroelectric, Geothermal, Biomass, Solar, and Wind |
| Examples of nonrenewable energy resources | coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear energy |
| Fossil fuel | a fuel (such as coal, oil, or natural gas) that is formed in the earth over millions of years from dead plants or animals |
| Ethanol | a colorless volatile flammable liquid (C2H5OH) used in fuel |
| Tidal energy | energy captured by transforming the wave motion of water into electrical energy using a turbine |
| Generator | A device used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy |
| Nuclear energy | the use of controlled reactions in the nucleus of an atom to release energy and produce steam, which in turn drives turbines to produce electricity |
| Greenhouse effect | Natural process in which heat is retained in Earth's atmosphere by carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases |
| Depletion | to use up ; to diminish greatly |
| Conservation | Careful use of resources |
| Biomass | the burning of organic material |
| Examples of biomass | Organic (once living or derived from living organisms) - wood, ethanol, garbage, and animal feces (poop) |
| Geothermal energy | Energy by using hot magma or hot, dry rocks inside the earth |
| Hydroelectric energy | Energy produced from generators driven by turbines that convert the potential energy of falling or fast-flowing water into mechanical energy or electricity. |
| Wind Energy | Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. |
| Fossil fuel energy | the burning of coal, oil and natural gas as a means of an energy source |
| Tidal energy | The energy captured by transforming the wave motion of water into electrical energy using a turbine |
| Renewable energy | energy from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished - a.k.a. clean energy |
| Nonrenewable energy | a natural resource that cannot be easily replaced by natural means quick enough to keep up with how fast it is being used |
