5 Author's Craft

Language

TermDefinition
Anecdote A brief telling or story of an interesting, and usually funny, incident or occurrence.
Figurative Language A word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning.
Hyperbole The use of language to exaggerate what you mean or emphasize a point.
Imagery When a writer appeals to a reader's senses by using descriptive and figurative language. This can include the sense of taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound.
Literal Language Means exactly what it says.
Metaphor A figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common.
Simile A way of describing something by comparing it to something else using 'like' or 'as', usually in an interesting or imaginative way.
Sound Device Literary elements used in prose and poetry to stress certain sounds and create musical effects.
Stereotyping An overly simple picture or opinion of a person, group or thing.
Voice Expresses the narrator or author’s emotions, attitude, tone and point of view through artful, well thought out use of word choice.
Foreshadow When the author gives you hints about what will happen later on in the story.
Suspense The intense feeling that an audience goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events.
