5 Tools to Know

Comprehension: Thinking with the Text

TermDefinition
Connections Are made when reading other books from the same author, stories from a similar genre, or stories about the same topic.
Evidence A piece of information from a text that we use to support our ideas
Inference To make an assumption about what is happening based on what you are reading and your background knowledge.
Main Idea The most important point of the message the author wants to share.
Synthesize The process of pulling together background knowledge, newly learned ideas, connections, inferences and summaries into a complete and original understanding of the text.
