5 Tools to Know

Reading Process: Thinking Within the Text

TermDefinition
Adjust When readers change the style and pace of their reading according to the purpose for the reading.
Annotate The process of thoughtful reading and making notes as you study a text.
Context A skill that readers use to figure out the meaning of unknown words from looking at the words around it.
Fluency The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
Genre A fancy name for books that share a certain style, form or content. There are two main types of reading material: fiction and non-fiction.
Mental Image What an individual can feel, hear, see or taste in one's own mind.
Monitor Occurs when students learn to listen to their inner voice as they read.
Multiple Meaning Words that have the same spelling and usually sound alike, but have different meanings
Prediction Thinking about a story and guessing what will happen next.
Structure The way a story is arranged when it's written.
