Reading Process: Thinking Within the Text
| Term | Definition |

| Adjust | When readers change the style and pace of their reading according to the purpose for the reading. |
| Annotate | The process of thoughtful reading and making notes as you study a text. |
| Context | A skill that readers use to figure out the meaning of unknown words from looking at the words around it. |
| Fluency | The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. |
| Genre | A fancy name for books that share a certain style, form or content. There are two main types of reading material: fiction and non-fiction. |
| Mental Image | What an individual can feel, hear, see or taste in one's own mind. |
| Monitor | Occurs when students learn to listen to their inner voice as they read. |
| Multiple Meaning | Words that have the same spelling and usually sound alike, but have different meanings |
| Prediction | Thinking about a story and guessing what will happen next. |
| Structure | The way a story is arranged when it's written. |
