| beat | The basic unit of time that determines the speed. A constant pulse. |
| semibreve | A note worth 4 beats. It is a hollow circle. |
| ostinato | A repeated pattern - rhythmic or melodic |
| value | How many beats a note is worth. |
| minim | A note worth two beats. It has a hollow notehead and a stem. |
| rests | Symbols that indicate silence in a piece of music. |
| semiquaver | A note worth ¼ of a beat. It has a coloured notehead, a stem and 2 tails. |
| time signature | The two numbers at the beginning of a piece of music, indicating how many beats are in each bar. |
| beam | Horizontal line/s that group quavers or semiquavers |
| quaver | A note worth ½ a beat. It has a coloured notehead, a stem and one tail. |
| rhythm | A combination of notes and rests in patterns that match the beat and time signature. |
| barlines | Vertical lines on the staff that divide notes into groups according to the time signature. |
