Compound light microscope The one we use in class. Uses a magnifying glass to enlarge slide. ocular magnification- 10x, objective- scaning-4x, low-10x, high-40x. To find the total magnification power. multiply the ocular power by the objective. illuminator- light/mirror
How do you use a compound light microscope? 1. place the specimen over the hole in the stage, and fasten the stage clips 2. use the coarse and fine adjustment knobs to raise and lower the stage.
Define Resolution The ability of a microscope to distinguish between two points close together. This allows us to see the sharpness of an image.
Stereomicroscope used in studying the external surface of structures. has two eyepeice lenses, used for veiwing large objects and things through which light cannot pass. you would use it to look at an insect wing.
Transmission electron microscope magnifies more than 250,000 times uses electron beams and magnets instead of light. an image of the object appears on a screen. objects must be sliced thin, dried, and embedded in plastic. Use it to look at a cell
scanning electron microncope electron beam pasess over the surface of the specimen shows surface structure of entire specimen
