Term | Definition |
---|---|
HOMIOSTASIS | It is the maintenance of relatively constant internal conditions despite changes in either the internal or the external environment. |
SET POINT | Normal reading or range of normal. |
INTERGRATOR | Discrete area of the brain, the integrator receives input from a homeostatic sensor. |
INTRACELLULAR CONTROL | Mechanisms operate at the cell level and regulates function within cell level. |
LIPIDS | water-insoluble organic bio-molecules. |
TRIGLYCERIDES (TRIACYLGLYCEROLS) | fats, are the most abundant lipids, and they function as the body’s most concentrated source of energy. |
ACIDS | substance that will release a hydrogen ion (H) when in solution. |
BASE | alkaline compounds, are electrolytes that, when dissociated in solution, shift the H/OH balance in favor of OH |
PH | the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. |
SALTS | any compound that results from the chemical interaction of an acid and a base. |
PRIMARY PROTEIN STRUCTURE | refers simply to the number, kind, and sequence of amino acids that make up the polypeptide chain. |
PLASMA MEMBRANE | Phospholipid bilayer reinforced with cholesterol and embedded with proteins and other organic molecule |
MICROVILLI | found in epithelial cells that line the intestines and other areas where absorption is important |
CILIA AND FLAGELLA | are cell processes that have cylinders made of mi-crotubules at their core. |
PROTEASOMES | A protein-destroying organelle in the cell |
DNA | deoxyribonucleic |
RNA | ribonucleic acids |
CARBOHYDRATE | compounds contain the ele-ments carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen—in the ratio of 1:2:1. |
MONOSACCHARIDES, | simple sugars, are rela-tively small carbohydrates. |
Endocytosis | the plasma membrane “traps” some extracellular material and brings it into the cell. |
