| cerebrum | Largest portion of the brain, divided into left and right hemispheres, it controls the skeletal muscles, interprets general senses and contains centers for sight and hearing. intellect, memory and emotional reactions as well. |
| cerebellum | located under the posterior portion of the cerebrum assists in coordination of skeletal muscles to maintain balance also called hindbrain |
| brainstem | stemlike portion of the brain that connects the spinal cord they control respiration, and heart rate. pons, medulla oblongata, and midbrain |
| pons | Bridge, connects cerebrum with the cerebellum and brainstem |
| medulla oblongata | located between pons and spinal cord it contains centers that control respiration heart rate and the muscles in the blood vessel walls which assist in determining BP |
| midbrain | most superior portion of brain stem |
| cerebral spinal fluid | clear fluid in ventricles that flows through subarachnoid space around brain and spinal cord cushions brain and SC from shock, transports nutrient and clears metabolism waste |
