Convection Currents
Review of Convection Currents Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Wind | The movement of air, caused by the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun and the Earth's own rotation. |
High Pressure | A region where the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the planet is greater than its surrounding environment. |
Low Pressure | A system that has lower pressure at its center than the areas around it. |
Convection Currents | The result of differential heating where lighter (less dense), warm material rises while heavier (more dense) cool material sinks. |
Ocean Currents | The movement of ocean water by wind, water density differences, and tides. |
Global Winds | Winds that occur in belts that go all around the planet caused by the unequal heating of the earth's atmosphere |
Local Breezes | winds that blow over a limited area. They blow between small low and high pressure systems. |
Cyclone | A system of winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure, with a counterclockwise (northern hemisphere) or clockwise (southern hemisphere) circulation; a depression. |
Thunderstorm | A storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail. |
