QuestionAnswer
Species All organisms that can mate with one another and produce viable (fertile) offspring
Inherited Trait traits passed down from parent to offspring; traits you are born with
Variation the difference in a trait Example: trait=number of legs; variation= 2 (humans), 4 (dogs); brown and blue eyes
Acquired Trait traits that can be learned or changed depending on an organism's interaction with its environment
Organism a living thing
heredity the passing down of traits from one generation to another.
DNA a molecule in the nucleus of a cell that carries the instructions of an organism
gene a unit of DNA that is usually located in a chromosome and that controls the development of one or more traits.
Chromosomes strings of DNA inside the nucleus of a cell
genetics the study of how traits are passed down
pedigree a diagram showing the keeps track of family relationships and genetic information
gamete a reproductive cell having a single set of chromosomes (sperm or egg)
offsrping are the young born of living organisms, produced in sexual reproduction of two organisms
sperm Male sex cell
egg Female sex cell
cell division Process by which a cell divides into two new daughter cells
nucleus Control center of the cell
mitosis A process that takes place in the nucleus of a dividing cell, involves four steps: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
allele Different forms of a gene eg. (AA, Aa, aa)
genes genes are part of DNA and carry hereditary information passed from parents to children.
dominant dominant version (allele) of a gene shows its specific trait even only if only one parent passed the gene to the child. example brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes B
recessive recessive gene shows its specific trait when both parents pass the gene to the child example bb
homozygous two of the same form of a gene- one from mom and the other from dad example bb, BB
heterozygous two different forms of a gene- one from mom and the other from dad are different example Bb
genotype internal genetic coding passed on from one generation to the next
phenotype outwardly expressed traits or characteristics
Survival of the Fittest Process by which better adapted organisms survive and reproduce. This phrase summarizes natural selection.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
