DNA

Rafael Izas Liard

QuestionAnswer
deoxyribonucleic acid -molecule found in the neucleus that acts as instructions that determine everything about a cell(what type of cell, how it functions, and how long it will live) -DNA can take the form of chromatin or it can coil up to create chromosomes
chromatin it is located within the neucleus and it's purpose is to create chromosomes it is cruisial in cell division
chromosomes every animal and plant species has a specific amount of chromosomes the size of the organism doesn't affect the number of chromosomes they come in pairs, one from your father and the other one from your mother it's a compact form of DNA that is
nitrogen base pairs there are 4 types of nitrogen bases and each one can pair with a specific other base adenine pairs with thymine guanine pairs with cytosine
adenine its one of the nitrogen base pairs used to create DNA it also is used to store energy in the cell it can only pair with thymine
thymine it is one of the 4 types of nitrogen bases and can only pair with adenine it's aslo the main stabilizer in the dna ladder to ensure that it will have a soldi fondation
cytosine it's one of the 4 types of nitrogen bases and can only pair with guanine
guanine it's one of the 4 types of nitrogen bases and can only pair with cytosine
double helix it's a structure formed by double starnded molecules of nucleic acids the double helix formation contains all the information to create new cells and is needed for cell replication
gene a segment of nitrogen base pairs forms a gene most genes contain 1000s of nucleotides they hold the instrutions on how to make proteins
nucleotide they are made from phosphate molecules, nitrogen base pairs, and sugar molecules combined they also hep create proteins
catalyze a verb meaning to accelerate a process
enzymes they are a type of protein that speeds up the rate of chemical reactions within a cell
genetic screening the process of testing a population for a genetic disease in order to identify a group of people that have or have the potential of spreading the disease
genetically modified organisms they are organisms that have had their genes modified in order to promote protein production
transgenic organisms they are used to solve problems like protecting crops form bugs there is no proof that they don't have negative effects organs from transgenic pigs are used for human transplants which could lead to humans contracting pig diseases
mutagen it is a cause for mutations such as radiation or harmful chemicals
mutation mutations are a result of a new protein being created which is caused by a change in the neucleotide sequence they can be very harmful and cause issues such as cancer and problems in reproduction but they can also have to effect at all or have a posi

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
