DNA Flash Cards

Biology Grade 10

TermDefinition
Deoxyribonucleic acid (Ethan D) Molecule found in the nucleus that acts as a code or instructions that determine everything about a cell.
Chromatin (Ethan D) Substance in a chromosome consisting of DNA and protein. DNA strands can take the form of chromatin.
Chromosomes (Ethan D) Structure that comes in pairs found in the nucleus that carries genetic information and is made up of nucleic acids and protein.
Nitrogen base pairs (Ethan D) A chain of nitrogen base pairs the genetic code or instructions come from which are arranged like a ladder.
Adenine (Ethan D) 1 of the 4 nitrogen bases that only pairs with thymine.
Thymine (Ethan D) 1 of the 4 nitrogen bases that pairs with Adenine.
Cytosine (Ethan D) 1 of the 4 nitrogen bases that pairs with Guanine.
Guanine (Ethan D) 1 of the 4 nitrogen bases that only pairs with Cytosine.
Double helix (Ethan D) The form of which the entire DNA ladder is twisted.
Gene (Ethan D) Formed by a segment of nitrogen base pairs.
Nucleotide (Ethan D) Provides instructions for how to build proteins and is in most genes with containing over 1000 inside. Formed from phosphate and sugar molecules, and nitrogen base pairs
Catalyze (Ethan D) Cause or accelerate an action, process or reaction.
Enzymes (Ethan D) Substance which acts as a catalyst to make a specific biochemical reaction.
Genetic screening (Ethan D) Used by doctors to examine DNA and identify disorders controlled by the genetic code.
Genetically modified organisms (Ethan D) Another term refferred to as as Transgenic Organisms.
Transgenic organisms (Ethan D) Used by scientists to transfer genes from one organism to promote protein production that wouldn't normally be found there naturally.
Mutagen (Ethan D) A, C, T, and G sequence can change due to a mutagen like radiation, electromagnetic signals or chemicals.
Mutation (Ethan D) Resulted from the change of the nucleotide sequence which also changes resulting in a mutation (or non-normal protein). Some can be harmful like causing cancer.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
