| Igneous | a type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface |
| Sedimentary | a type of rock that forms from compressed or cemented layers of sediment |
| Metamorphic | a type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. |
| Batholith | A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust |
| Laccolith | A mushroom-shaped mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust |
| Lopolith | A large, bowl-shaped body of igneous rock intruded between layers of sedimentary rock. |
| Dyke | A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma intrudes vertically through bedding planes |
| Butte | A narrow flat topped rock or hill formation with steep sides. |
| Mesa | A flat-topped mountain or hill. It is a wide, flat, elevated landform with steep sides. |
| Magma | A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle |
| Lava | Magma that reaches Earth's surface |
