1.1 Cell Structure

Zukhraf Javaid

TermDefinition
Organelles (Zukhraf J) Structures in the cell, also known as "little organs"
Cytosol (Zukhraf J) The clear, watery liquid between the cell wall and the nucleus
Cytoplasm (Zukhraf J) All the floating organelles plus the fluid (cytosol) - held together by phospholipid bilayer
Cell membrane (Zukhraf J) Controls what goes in and out of the cell
Nucleus (Zukhraf J) Is like the brain of the cell, controlling all the cells functions ("Cells boss")
Nuclear membrane (Zukhraf J) Controls what goes into and out of the nucleus
Chromatin (DNA) (Zukhraf J) Decides what happens in the cells
Mitochondria (Zukhraf J) Creates energy that cells need in order to function and live
Endoplasmic reticulum (Zukhraf J) Passageway for transporting materials - Are channels that transport proteins made by "ribosomes" . It is close to the nucleus so it can receive messages quickly
Ribosomes (Zukhraf J) Create proteins
Vesicles (Zukhraf J) Are transport containers that transports stuff around the cell, such as proteins.
Golgi apparatus (Zukhraf J) Receives vesicles. Have the job to sort proteins and transport them in new vesicles around the cell or cells around the cell membrane. Also create lysosomes
Lysosomes (Zukhraf J) Vesicles that contain enzymes that can break things down for reuse and recycle and can destroy invading microbes
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) (Zukhraf J) A form of energy in living cells. Involves glucose and oxygen
Cell wall* (Zukhraf J) Found in plant cells. It is a rigid outer that provides structure and protection for plants. Helps keep them stand up since they don't have bones
Chloroplast* (Zukhraf J) Contain chlorophyll for the process of photosynthesis
Chlorophyll* (Zukhraf J) Make energy using carbon dioxide, water, and the sun's energy
Large vacuoles* (Zukhraf J) Stores a lot of water for plants. This is because it doesn't rain a lot. Provides a good posture/structure for the plants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
