| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Aquifer | a body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater. |
| Groundwater | water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers |
| Desalination | Process of removing salt from water. Very expensive process when attempted on a large scale. |
| Salinity | A measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid |
| Ocean | A large body of salt water. Acts like a carbon sink. Largest area of evaporation, which helps to produce weather events. |
| Watershed (Drainage basin) | The land from which surface water drains into a particular river, lake, wetland, or other body of water. |
| Water pollution | Any physical or chemical change in surface water or groundwater that can harm living organisms or make water unfit for certain uses. |
| Runoff | Water that moves across the land surface and into streams and rivers. Sometimes this can carry large amounts of pollutants with it leading to eutrophication or fish kill events. |
| Eutrophication | A process by which nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, become highly concentrated in a body of water, leading to increased growth of organisms such as algae or cyanobacteria. |
| Estuary | the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream. Filter out sediments and pollutants; many fish and shellfish complete at least one part of their life cycles in estuaries |
| Fertilizer | any substance such as manure or a mixture of nitrates used to make soil more fertile. Fertilizers can pollute the water ways, leading to eutrophication |
| Dissolved Oxygen | oxygen dissolved in water, dissolved oxygen is important for fish and other aquatic animals |
| Temperature | A measure of how hot or cold something is. Temperatures too hot or too cold is not tolerable to most living things and therefore they will die. |
| pH | How acidic or basic the water is or hydrogen ion concentration. Neutral pH is 7. Acids have a pH lower than 7 and bases have pH higher than 7 |
| Turbidity | a measure of how clear water is. The more suspended solids there are in a water sample, the LESS transparent, or MORE turbid it is. |
| wetlands | a lowland area, such as a marsh or swamp, that is saturated with moisture, especially when regarded as the natural habitat of wildlife. |
| Point source pollution | pollution that enters a body of water from a specific source |
| Non-point source pollution | pollutions enters a reservoir with no known origin or souce. |
| groundwater recharge | The area where the aquifer is refilled. |
| Upwelling | The movement of deep, cold, and nutrient-rich water to the surface |
| hydrologic cycle (The water cycle) | The continual movement of water among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land surface through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation |
| Glaciers and aquifers | Places where fresh water may be locked away. |
| Infiltration | Flow of water from the land surface into the subsurface. |
| Permeable | Able to be passed or soaked through |
| Impermeable | Not able to be passed or soaked through |
