Unit 7

AP Biology Unit 7 Vocabulary- Silim

TermDefinition
Evolution change of traits in a species
Evolutionary Fitness Species ability to survive and ability to have offspring
Natural Selection process where organisms better suited for the environment tend to have more offspring and pass on their traits
Selective Pressure pressure that causes a species to have an advantageous or disadvantageous trait
Adaptive Radiation Evolution of species that allow them to fill niche in their environment
Biological Species Concept species is a group of organisms that can mate/interbreed
Divergent Evolution two species with a common ancestor diverge into species with different characteristics
Gradualism evolution comes gradually
Punctuated Equilibrium Evolution after a time of stasis(not much evolution)
Reproductive Isolation Properties that don't allow interbreeding
Speciation formation of new species
Ecosystems community of species interacting with their environment
Extinction When a species is gone, and no future generations can be made
Niche Species role in the environment
Species Diversity number of species and abundance in each location
RNA World Hypothesis life began with a simple RNA molecule
Convergent Evolution Separate species evolve with similar characteristics due to similar environments/pressures
Bottleneck Effect reduced and sudden change in population size
Founder Effect reduced genetic diversity as only small population size appears, separated
Genetic Drift change of allele frequency due to a huge event
Mutation Change in the allele of an organism
Population group of the same species
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium p2+2pq+q2=1, no mutation, random mating, no gene flow, infinite population size, and no selection
Migration movement of organism(s) form one place to another
Null Hypothesis Happened by chance, no relation in hypothesis
Fossil preserved remains
Isotope same atomic number but different masses
Morphology form of living organisms and their structures
Vestigial Structure structure that is useless, snake having legs
Cladogram branching diagram that show relationships
Lineage sequence of species each evolved from its predecessor
Molecular Clock average rate that a species genome accumulates mutations
Out-Group Group that is the least similar in a phylogenetic tree/cladogram
Phylogenetic Tree branching diagram that shows evolutionary relationships
Phylogeny history of evolution in species

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
