Exploring Space

TermDefinition
Electromagnetic Spectrum The entire range of radiant energy carried by electromagnetic waves.
Gamma rays Electromagnetic waves that have the shortest wavelength but the most energy
Refracting Telescope Electromagnetic waves that have the longest wavelength but the least energy
Visible light The only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans are able to see with just their eyes
Refracting Telescope A telescope that uses a convex lens to concentrate light from a distant object
Reflecting Telescope A telescope that uses curved mirrors to concentrate light from a distant object
Radio telescope A telescope that collects radio waves and some microwaves using an antenna that looks like a TV satellite dish
Optical telescope Telescopes that collect visible light
Earths Atmosphere This distorts electromagnetic waves and is the reason that we put telescopes in space
Rocket A vehicle designed to propel itself by ejecting exhaust gas from one end
Satellite Any small object that orbits a larger object
Space Probe An uncrewed spacecraft sent form earth to explore objects in space
Lunar A term that refers to anything related to the moon
Solar A term that refers to anything related to the sun
Project Apollo A series of space missions designed to send people to the moon
Apollo 11 The space mission where humans first landed on the moon
Space Shuttle Reusable spacecraft that transport people and materials to and from space
Pluto A Planet that is far from the sun that we now consider to be a dwarf planet
Extraterrestrial life Life that originates outside of Earth
