| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | A substance sticking to another surface, like Water sticking to a mirror. |
| Cohesion | A substance sticking to another of the SAME substance, like water droplets merging. |
| Ground Water | Water stored and flowing under ground, eventually getting into a lake, river, or ocean. |
| Heat Energy | The energy found in the average speed of moving atoms. Faster atoms are hotter. |
| Specific Heat | The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a substance. Water has high specific heat. |
| surface tension | The tension of the surface of a liquid that can support solid objects, like a paper clip on water. |
| Hydrosphere | All the waters on the earth's surface, such as lakes and seas, rivers, and even the clouds in the sky. |
| Hydrothermal vents | Volcanic vents under the ocean |
| Permeability | The quality of a solid that allows liquids to get through it. |
| Photic Zone | The upper most zone of the ocean that still receives sunlight. |
| Water Polarity | Water has poles, like a magnet. Hydrogen atoms gives a slightly positive charge, the oxygen a slightly negative. |
| River Basin | The region of land that feeds a river its water. |
| Bio-Indicators | Sensitive living things, like insects and fish, that can help us determine the general health of a habitat with their presence. |
| Dissolved Oxygen | The amount of oxygen in water as tiny gas particles (not part of the water molecule). Fish need this to breathe. |
| Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | Federally run agency that protects the environment through regulation and enforcement. |
| Nitrates | A natural chemical that can pollute waters if there is too much. Can come from fertilizer and run off from farms. |
| PH level | Scale of acidity from 0-14. low ph is high in acids, high ph is high in alkaline, and 7 is neutral and healthy for water. |
| phosphates | Chemical that pollutes water, causing algae blooms. |
| potable water | Drinking water, which is rare. |
| Salinity | The amount of dissolved salt in water. |
| Turbidity | A measure of how clear or cloudy water appears. High turbidity is foggy, muddy, or murky water. |
| Runoff | Water that travels from one place to another on the ground, can cause flooding. |
| Tributaries | A river or stream that runs into a larger body of fresh water. |
| Brackish water | salty water that is fresher than sea water, like water in estuaries. Lower Salinity. |
| Chemosynthesis | Some rare living things can make biomass from chemicals instead of sunlight. They live by hydrothermal vents. |
| Upwelling | Nutrients rise on these cold underwater currents from the deep ocean to the shallow. |
| Nonpoint pollution | pollution discovered in a wide area found in ground water or as sediments. |
| Point Pollution | Pollution coming from a direct location, like an oil spill or fallen trash can. |
