Sc8-Earth Sci Rev 2

Sc8-Earth Sci Rev 2 short answer

QuestionAnswer
Name three pieces of evidence that made Wegener and others believe his Continental Drift Theory. *he jigsaw puzzle fit of the continents *matching mountain ranges and rock structures on continents that fit together in the puzzle *matching fossil records *matching paleoglaciation *matching coal deposits
What were the first two continents that Wegener "matched"? South America and Africa
Why did people not believe Wegener at first? The idea was very new and startling but also, Wegener did not propose any explanation for HOW the continents could move.
How did the Hawaiian Islands form? A tectonic plate moved slowly over a hot spot; periodic break throughs (eruptions) formed a row of islands.
What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics and who stated it first? Canadian geologist J. Tuzo Wilson was first to suggest that the Earth's crust is broken into large plates that move over the asthenosphere riding on moving molten rock below.
Draw a diagram and use words to explain how tectonic plates can be pushed together. Within the Earth's surface, hot molten rock rises, cools, and then sinks again. Slabs of Earth's broken crust float on the molten rock. Where convection cycles meet they can push the slabs of rock together. This forms a converging plate boundary.
How are the theories of continental drift and plate tectonics related? The Plate Tectonic theory gives a mechanism for how Continental Drift might occur.
