| wave | any disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space |
| medium | a substance through which a wave can travel |
| transverse wave | waves in which the particles vibrate in an up and down motion |
| longitudinal wave | waves in which the particles vibrate back and forth |
| mechanical wave | waves that need a medium to travel |
| electromagnetic wave | waves that do not need a medium to travel |
| crest | highest part of a wave |
| trough | lowest part of a wave |
| amplitude | wave height |
| wavelength | distance between 2 crests or 2 troughs |
| frequency | the number of waves that pass by a point each second |
| compression | part of a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest together |
| rarefaction | part of a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart |
