Plant Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anther | The part of a flower’s stamen that contains the pollen |
| Dicot | Has two cotyledons (Embryo), veins are typically net-like, has a taproot system, and flower parts are typically in multiples of 4 or 5 |
| Dormant | When a plant or seed stops growing due to changes in temperature or amount of water Examples: During the winter, when there are no leaves or greenery on trees |
| Embryo | (In plants) Fertilized egg which will form a new plant |
| Fibrous Root | Consists of several main roots that branch off to form a mass of roots Examples: grass, corn, some trees |
| Germination | The process of a young plant sprouting from a seed |
| Gravitropism | When a plant grows away from gravity |
| Glucose | Simple sugar produced by photosynthesis |
| Guard Cells | Cells on the underside of a leaf that open and close the stomata |
| Hydrotropism | The way a plant grows in response to water; the roots move towards the water source |
| Monocot | has one cotyledon (embryo), veins are typically parallel, has a fibrous root system, and flower parts are typically in multiples of 3 |
| Nonvascular | Does not have a well-developed system to transport water and food Examples: moss, liverwort, hornwort |
| Ovary | Does not have a well-developed system to transport water and food Examples: moss, liverwort, hornwort |
| Ovule | Contains the embryo; develops into a seed once it is fertilized |
| Photosynthesis | Process in which plants make their own food (glucose) |
| Phloem | Transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant |
| Pistil | Female organ of a flower & contains the ovary, stigma, and style |
| Respiration | Process of plants breaking down the glucose (made from photosynthesis) in the cells; gives the plant its energy |
| Spore | A reproductive cell that can grow into a new organism without fertilization |
| Stamen | The male organ of a flower that has an anther on a stalk |
| Stigma | The sticky top of a pistil where the pollen lands |
| Style | The stalk of a pistil where the pollen goes after it has been fertilized |
| Taproot | One large main root with smaller roots branching off Examples: carrot, dandelions, cacti |
| Thigmostropism | The ability for a plant to close its leaves when touched |
| Transpiration | The process of plants losing water through their leaves |
| Tropism | A plant’s response to changes in the environment |
| Vascular | Has a system to transport food and water through the plant Examples: trees, dandelions, tomato plants |
| Xylem | Transport water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant |
