| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| hydrology | the study of water on earth |
| water cycle | the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration. |
| evaporation | water goes from liquid to gas |
| condensation | water goes from gas to liquid (clouds) |
| percipitaton | rain, snow, sleet, hail falling to the ground |
| temperature | how hot or cold it is |
| salinity | how much dissolved salt something holds |
| density | weight per size, how closely the molecules are packed together |
| run-off | water that does not absorb, but runs off down the surface |
| transpiration | plants 'breathing' water out (plant sweat) |
| ground water | water under the ground in aquifers |
| currents | the movement of water in the oceans, controlled by wind, tides, plate tectonics, water density etc. |
| Coriolis Effect | the curving of currents due to the spinning of the earth |
