Volcanoes

| volcanology | The study of volcanoes, magma, lava, and related topics |
| magma | Molten rock / hot fluid in the mantle (below the earth’s crust) |
| lava | Liquid molten rock that has reached the earth’s surface. Solid rock when cooled. |
| conduit | The channel where magma travels up the volcano. |
| vent | The opening of the volcano |
| magma chamber | Where the magma is stored in the volcano |
| composite volcano | Also known as a stratovolcano. It is a conical volcano with many layers of lava, tephra, and ash. |
| shield volcano | Volcano with gently sloping sides. Mostly fluid magma eruption. |
| cinder cone volcano | Volcano with a steep conical (cone shaped) hill – most common type. Volcanic debris around the vent |
| caldera | A volcanic crater from a collapsed magma chamber (where a volcano erupted). |
| volcanic bomb | Molten rock mass ejected from a volcano during an eruption |
| igneous rock | Rock formed from cooling and hardening of magma. |
| geyser | A hot spring where boiling water shoots up a tall column of water and steam |
| hot spots | Area in the mantel where heat rises |
| fumaroles | Opening in the earth’s crust that emits steam and gases. |
| pyroclastic flow | Fast moving current of hot gas and rock |
