Global Weather

TermDefinition
water cycle The continual movement of water among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land surface through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
evaporation The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas
transpiration the release of water vapor into the air by leaves of a plant
sublimation A change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid- when solid water changes to water vapor without becoming a liquid
condensation The change from a gas to a liquid
precipitation rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground.
weather the state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air- measured by a hygrometer
river are large, natural streams of fresh water.
stream a small, narrow river.
lake a large body of water surrounded by land on all sides
surface runoff Water flowing off the land into bodies of surface water.
groundwater Water found below the Earth's surface.
relative humidity the amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature.
sea breeze movement of air from sea to land during the day when cooler air from above the water moves over the land, forcing the heated, less dense air above the land to rise
dew point The temperature at which condensation begins
air pressure A force that is the result of the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area-measured by a barometer
wind the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure
visibility degree of clearness of the atmosphere, with reference to the distance at which objects can be clearly seen
air mass A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height
front The boundary where unlike air masses meet but do not mix
jet stream a high-speed high-altitude air stream blowing from west to east near the top of the troposphere
thunderstorm A small storm often accompanied by heavy precipitation and frequent thunder and lightning
hurricane A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure storm center
Coriolis effect Causes moving air and water to turn left in the southern hemisphere and turn right in the northern hemisphere due to Earth's hemisphere.
global winds winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances
local winds Winds that blow over short distances caused by unequal heating of Earth's surface within a small area
ocean currents Global patterns created from the movement of the oceans; such as the Gulf Stream
surface currents A horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind and that occurs at or near the ocean's surface
upwelling the upward movement of ocean water toward the surface as a result of diverging currents
climate The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
latitude distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees
longitude the distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
