Plate Boundaries
Plate Boundaries, Earthquakes and Volcanoes
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Volcano | a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface. |
Magma | Found underground: mixture of rock-forming substances, water, and gases from the mantle. (molten) |
Lava | found at the surface: mixture of rock-forming substances, water, and gases from the mantle. (molten) |
A volcano can form along | Hot Spots, Mid-Ocean Ridges, Subduction zones and Rift Valleys |
Caldera | a hole in a collapsed volcano, usually located at the top. |
Pyroclastic Flow | dense, fast-moving current of hot gas, ash, and matter (also known as a tephra) |
Quiet Volcanic Eruption | low levels of silica and the lava slowly oozes out |
Violent volcanic eruption | High levels of silica and the lava blasts out quickly |
Fracture | breaking of rocks |
Deformation | bending or folding of rocks |
Faults | cracks in the crust where MOVEMENT occurs |
Compression stress occurs at a _________ boundary | Convergent boundary |
Shear stress occurs at a _________ boundary | Transform boundary |
Tension stress occurs at a _________ boundary | Divergent boundary |
Thrust fault occurs at a ____________ boundary | Convergent boundary |
Strike-slip fault occurs at a ____________ boundary | Transform boundary |
Normal fault occurs at a ____________ boundary | Divergent boundary |
Epicenter | the location on the earth’s surface above the spot where earthquake originates |
Focus | The exact location under the earth’s surface where the plates move releasing seismic waves |
Magnitude | the measure of the energy released |
Surface wave | most damaging wave |
Primary wave | the wave travels through ALL matter |
Secondary wave | the wave can travel through everything EXCEPT liquids |
