Galaxies Vocab

TermDefinition
Universe The universe is always expanding and holds all life.
Galaxy A system of millions or billions of stars, made of gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction, & are different sizes and shapes.
Disk & Spiral Shaped Galaxy Has "arms", Dense center.
Irregular Shaped Galaxy No defined shape, no clear bulge or disk, the leftovers of two colliding galaxies.
Elliptical Shaped Galaxy Oval shaped, most abundant galaxies in the universe, most are composed of older, low-mass stars.
Milky Way We live in a spiral galaxy called the milky way.
Light Year The distance light travels in one year.
Cluster A cluster of stars can appear in a galaxy
Andromeda Galaxy A spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from earth and is the nearest major galaxy to the milky way.
