Adaptation

| adaptation | A trait that helps a species in its environment |
| physical characteristic | relating to the structure size or shape of an organism physical feature |
| physical adaptation | a structural adaptation made to part of the body |
| physiological adaptation | an adaptation that involves a body parts job of controlling a life process |
| behavioral adaptations | a behavior that helps a specie survive in its environment usually in response to some external stimulus |
| migration | to move from one place to another for different parts of the year to aid in survival |
| hibernation | a sleep like state during which breathing and heart rate slows down |
| estivate | a daily long term, sleep-like states that aides in animals survival during extreme ecological conditions |
| territory | a space that animals defend or protect against other animals of its own kind |
| inherited trait | trait or character that is genetically inherited or passed down from generation to generation |
| acquired trait | a characteristic resulting from an organisms interaction with the environment |
| gene | a basic unit of heredity that determines particular characteristics of an organisms |
| chromosome | springlike structure in a cell nucleus that carries information controlling all of the cells activities |
| Traits | Characteristics of an individual that can be inherited from parents. |
| offspring | The children of animal parents (that includes humans too!) |
| inherit | The process of traits being passed down from parents to offspring. |
| predator | An animal that eats other animals. |
| prey | an animal that is eaten by other animals. |
| Camouflage | A pattern, color or shape that helps a living thing blend into its environment. It is usually used to help prey avoid predators or for predators not to be seen by prey. |
| variation | change in the form or condition of something |
| species | one kind of organism that is able to mate with others of its own kind |
| Charles Darwin | suggested the theory of evolution by natural selection |
| natural selection | the idea that those organisms best adapted to their enviroment will be ones most likely to survive and reproduce |
| survival of the fittest | The idea that species adapt and change by natural selection |
| competition | rivalry between or among living things for resources, such as food, space, shelter, mate, ecological status, |
| mutation | mutation- a permanent change in DNA that occurs when it copies itself |
| become extinct | their is no more of the living kind of organisms of that species |
